Upgrade from Yosemite v 10.10.x to El Capitan stalled 2/3 of the way across progress bar. Can I do a hard shutdown mid-upgrade to resume or recover?

Upgrade from Yosemite v10.10.x to El Capitan stalled 2/3 of the way across installation progress bar. Been stuck for hours.

Can I hard-shut down and re-start the MacBook mid-upgrade to recover and complete the upgrade? No other apparent alternatives.

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
